Semi - Final vs. Del Mar Sharks 4-0

Playing a team that we had never previously beaten. In both tournaments we played them, Surf Cup and NHB, they came out victorious. It was a very confident and composed display from our boys overrunning the Sharks in every department. The forward play of Jorge Ruiz and Oscar Palma were a continued threat throughout the contest and with the support from our midfielders Jeff Quezada and Tommy Fraher we dominated proceedings running out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Final vs. Fullerton Rangers 3-2

A repeat of the Celtic Cup Semi-Final. In that game the wind and field conditions played a huge part in proceedings with a 35 mph wind directed into one of the goals. In that game the Rangers built up a 4-2 lead at half time but the desire of my boys enabled us to pull out a 5-4 win. We knew it would be a tight game and a contrast of styles with the Rangers having players that can shoot from the half way line and our boys who play a much more possession-based style.

We started brightly and scored the opening goal, a great run and cross from wide wasn’t cleared by the defense and Tommy Fraher popped up with a great volley from just inside the box to give us a 1-0 lead. As expected, their #9 put the ball on the spot for the restart and drove a ball from there into the top corner with aplomb, I couldn’t have saved it myself, an excellent strike that brought us back to level terms. 1-1.

We regrouped and started to play much the better soccer which led to a great ball being played in behind the defense and Oscar Palma beating the goalkeeper to the ball, realizing he couldn’t get there he hauled Oscar down in the penalty area for a blatant penalty. Tommy Fraher was cool and collected and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-1, he has slotted them away all week in practice and even under the pressure he stroked the ball home.

HALF TIME

Being up at half time was a great confidence booster for the boys and they were told that if they continued to play as well as they had in the first half then they would be State Champs, I was sure of it. A long ball, their main method of attack, caused us problems down the right hand side, which resulted in us conceding a corner. The ball was delivered and some indecisive finishing allowing their player to head it home under no real pressure. A disappointing goal to concede, as we had been much the better team at the beginning of the half. Hamilton Evans then produced a remarkable save soon after which very much kept us on top of our game. The boys never let their heads drop and maintained their focus to bounce back.

The winning goal was a trademark Palma finish. The ball was played into Oscar’s feet with a defender in close attendance; he swivels and hooks the ball with his right foot past the goalkeeper and into the far corner to make it 3-2 LAFC. The Rangers towards the end of the game started to put us under more pressure with their aerial balls but we held firm with some brave defending from Michael Mojarro and Sebastian Velasco. Timmy Bates kept their wingers under wraps and Elan Koenig and we created great opportunities from wide areas with the pace of Jorge Ruiz and the vision of Jeff Quezada. Top goal scoring performances from Oscar Palma and Tommy Fraher proved to be the deciding factor in the game.

It was a great run in the competition with us scoring 47 goals and only allowing 7 in return. Every single one of our players scored during the run including a brace from our Goalie Hamilton Evans in pool play. An excellent adventure and something I'm sure the boys will remember long after.
