• New Pacific-South Division team will be based
    out of Pasadena-area
    • PASADENA, CA (02/06/10) — Los Angeles F.C. Chelsea is the newest member team in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), and are hoping their inaugural season in the Pacific-South Division will come up nothing but roses. The Pasadena-based club will play their home games at La Canada High School in La Canada, CA and already have an experienced WPSL mentor to lead the troops this Summer 2010 season.
    • Emanuel “Manny” Martins has been hired as Head Coach for LAFC Chelsea, coming off his 2-year stint as leader of the now-disbanded WPSL Los Angeles Rampage - who finished fourth with a 7-5-2 record in the very competitive Pacific-South Division last season. With the Rampage, Martins had three players honored with All-Pacific Conference accolades: Marihelen Tomer, Susie Mischenko and Faye Rabson.
    • In recent years, LAFC Chelsea has been intent on improving its girls’ program, adding new teams and top coaches. The club’s Vice President of Soccer Operations Ted Chronopoulos believes that the addition of this WPSL team - which competes on the second-tier of women’s soccer in this country below Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) — will further raise the club’s stature and help with recruiting by creating a rare incentive: few youth clubs nationwide offer playing opportunities beyond the Under-19 division.
    • LAFC — which ranks among the best clubs in the U.S. for youth development — will recruit older players in upcoming months, although the club will draw much of its roster from the Rampage team that Martins led the past two seasons. They’ll have their hands full in the Pacific-South, facing the likes of 2009 National Finalist Ajax America and a strong SD United side.
    • “This will give our best players something to shoot for and it will speak volumes about LAFC Chelsea’s long-term commitment to its players,” Chronopoulos says. “We are well on our way to becoming a national hub for soccer development and this represents another valuable resource… I’m eager to see how we’ll fare against such strong teams. I have high hopes for the development of our players and our women’s program.”
    • LAFC includes over 50 boys & girls teams with 800 players from ages eight to eighteen and this past year, the academy placed seven players on U.S. National Team rosters. Chelsea Football Club’s youth super club network began in July 2008 and formed a partnership with LAFC - one of the most decorated youth soccer academies in the U.S. — becoming the third such club to join Chelsea’s network.
    • LAFC Chelsea now hosts Chelsea tournaments, training sessions and a player and coach exchange program. Also a result of the partnership, LAFC Chelsea offers more scholarships for young athletes with financial hardship. LAFC provides kids across Southern California and throughout the country the opportunity to play competitive soccer regardless of ability to pay club membership costs.
    • “Our youth super club network is designed to support soccer development in the U.S.,” said Chelsea F.C. Chief Executive Peter Kenyon, at the time when the partnership was announced. “LAFC shares the same goal and has demonstrated rapid growth of their club and talent. Since its inception, LAFC has provided young athletes the opportunity to play competitive soccer through financial support.
    • “With our new partnership, we hope that the association with Chelsea can attract and leverage additional funding scholarships, helping to further develop the academy and club. Providing elite training for young talent is critical to the long-term development of the sport in America.”
    • Martins — who holds three USSF National coaching licenses — is currently in his first year as the head coach for the Los Angeles Mission College men’s soccer team and is in his second year as head coach for the Granada Hills Charter H.S. boys soccer program. He has also recently joined the Olympic Development Program (ODP) as a talent, and in the past served for three seasons as the men’s assistant coach at Cal Poly Pomona (Div. II - CCAA), was the head coach at Sylmar High School for eight years and an assistant coach at Los Angeles Mission College for three years.
    • LAFC Chelsea will play its home games in La Canada at La Canada High School, and will feature some local players as well as top college players from across the nation and internationals. Tryouts will be held in March and for more team information, visit their official website at http://www.lafcsoccer.com.
